সুষ্মিতা জাফরের জন্ম ১১ ডিসেম্বর, ফরিদপুরে। বড় হওয়া রাজধানী ঢাকায়। স্কুল ও কলেজজীবন কেটেছে ভিকারুননিসা নূন স্কুল অ্যান্ড কলেজে। ফরিদপুর মেডিকেল কলেজ থেকে এম.বি.বি.এস. শেষ করার পর বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব মেডিকেল ইউনিভার্সিটির অধীন নিপসম থেকে পাবলিক হেলথে স্নাতকোত্তর সম্পন্ন করেন।
নতুন কিছু শেখা আর সৃজনশীল কাজ — এই দু’টোতেই তাঁর গভীর আগ্রহ। শিশু-সচেতনতা ও বিকাশ নিয়ে কাজ করা সংগঠন ‘চাইল্ড সেন্ট্রিক ক্রিয়েটিভ সেন্টার’–এর সঙ্গে যুক্ত আছেন।
লেখালেখির শুরু মাত্র ছয় বছর বয়সে — হোমওয়ার্ক খাতার পেছনে ছোট ছোট গল্প আর কবিতা দিয়ে। ১৯৯৯ সালে দৈনিক ইত্তেফাকের ‘কচি কাঁচার আসর’–এ ছাপা হয় তাঁর প্রথম কবিতা; একই বছর দৈনিক প্রথম আলোর ‘গোল্লাছুট’–এ প্রকাশিত হয় প্রথম গল্প। ২০০৭ থেকে ২০১২ — এই সময়টায় দৈনিক পত্রিকা, মিস্ট্রি ম্যাগাজিন, কিশোর তারকালোকসহ বিভিন্ন মাসিক পত্রিকায় তাঁর পঞ্চাশটিরও বেশি কবিতা ও গল্প প্রকাশিত হয়।
২০১২ সালে দৈনিক সকালের খবরের ভ্যালেন্টাইনস ডে সংখ্যায় ‘হঠাৎ ভালোলাগা’ গল্পটি প্রথম পুরস্কার পায় — এক নিঃশব্দ মাইলফলক, যা তাঁকে দীর্ঘ আঙ্গিকের ফিকশনের পথে এনে দাঁড় করায়। সমকালীন আর হরর — দু’ধরনের গল্পেই তাঁর সমান স্বাচ্ছন্দ্য। এ পর্যন্ত লিখেছেন ষাটেরও বেশি গল্প। প্রথম বই, গল্পসংকলন সোয়েটার, প্রকাশিত হয় ২০২০ সালে, পরিবার পাবলিকেশন্স থেকে।

Sushmita Zafar was born on 11 December in Faridpur and grew up in Dhaka. She was schooled at Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, earned her M.B.B.S. from Faridpur Medical College and a postgraduate degree in Public Health from NIPSOM, an institution under Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.
Curious by nature and drawn to creative practice, she is associated with the Child Centric Creative Center — an organisation working on child welfare and awareness.
She began writing at six — small stories and poems in the back pages of homework notebooks. In 1999, her first poem appeared in the ‘Kochi Kacharer Asor’ pages of Daily Ittefaq; her first short story in Daily Prothom Alo’s ‘Golachhut’ the same year. Between 2007 and 2012, more than fifty of her poems and stories were published across daily newspapers, mystery magazines and monthlies including Kishor Tarakalok.
In 2012, her short story ‘Hotto Valolaga’ took first place in Daily Sakaler Khobor’s Valentine’s Day issue. Sixty-plus stories later, her debut collection Sweater was published by Paribar Publications in 2020. Novels and collections followed — Jagorone Jay Bibhabori, Adharer Juboraj, Switched Off, Tui Ar Ektu Anmone Thak, Bhalobasha Megh — alongside two edited volumes of children’s mystery and thriller stories.
